Boy Scout Troop 6

The Oldest Troop in North Dakota - Continuously Chartered Since 1918

Troop 6 is sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church (3rd and Thayer) and meets on Tuesday nights (except for the first Tuesday of the month which is used as a planning meeting) from 7:00 - 8:15 PM.

Troop 6 puts the Outing in Scouting - our program is based around our outdoor program. During the year we will have at least one outing each month. Over the past year, these outings have included canoeing, hiking, biking, attending summer camp and camping across North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota. The Troop also offers a high adventure trip every year - 2005 - Scout Canoe Base in Ely Minnesota, 2006 - Canoe trip in Yellowstone Park, and for 2007 we are planning a five day backpacking trip to the Beartooth Mountains in Montana in early August. This summer we also plan on attending summer camp at Camp Lewis and Clark near Yankton South Dakota July 15th - 21st. Troop 6 participates in District activities including camporees, Scout Show, and the Order of the Arrow, among others.

Troop 6 has an active program outside of our camping trips. Over the past year, we have worked on many different programs through our outings and meetings, encouraging advancement for the boys while they have fun.

The Troop takes part in service projects throughout the year - highway cleanup on 1804, Scouting for food, flag retirement ceremonies, and Medora flag ceremonies, among others. Another important part of Scouting is giving the boys the opportunity to learn to be leaders. We encourage the Scouts to take on increasing levels of responsibility as they grow in experience.

Registration fees for the Troop are $25. Troop 6 provides fund raising opportunities both for the Troop and the Scouts. Included among these are popcorn and wreath sales, the McQuade Homerun Derby, a Pancake Breakfast and Spaghetti Dinner. While we provide these options for the boys to earn money towards their participation, our emphasis is on our Program, not always on fund raising.

We look forward to having you attend one of our outings or meetings to get to know us. We know that you will like what you see.

Troop 6 Winning Boat
Troop 6 Builds a Boat

Boy Scout Troop 6 (sponsored by Bismarck's First Presbyterian Church) participated in the first ever Scout Milk Carton Boat Race Spring Camporee. Mark Zimmerman, Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 6, organized the event which brought together over 270 Scouts and adults from 20 Boy Scout Troops and three Cub Scout Packs. They came from as far away as Williston and Minot. Scouts camped at Lake Nelson, near Center, ND, and spent Friday night and most of the day Saturday building their boats. Boats could be made of any material, but the flotation of the boat must be accomplished with the use of either half-gallon milk cartons or one gallon plastic milk jugs. Patrick Schwartz, father of two members of Troop 6, served as the engineering advisor to the project.

Most of the boats were variations on a raft design, often with outriggers for stability. Troop 6's boat was unique in that it incorporated a tandem bicycle powering a propeller and supported by a wooden frame. Seventy-two one gallon milk jugs were used to provide flotation. The Scouts picked Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as the theme, as 2009 is the 25th anniversary of the cartoon characters. Scouts from Troop 6 all wore masks like the turtles and four of the Scouts, Michael Berger, Braden Heinert, John Schwartz, and Tom Stromme, also wore green body paint and a trash can lid on their back for their turtle shell. Scoutmaster Mike Briggs dressed up as the leader of the turtles, the Master Splinter.

All of the Scouts helped to decorate the boat using milk cartons, green paint, a tarp, and duct tape. Two of the green painted Scouts, Tom and Michael, drove the boat in the race. The Troop 6 boat turned in the best time of the day and we were rewarded with the gold medal - a gold painted half gallon milk carton, which is proudly exhibited in the display case located in the Sunday School/Scout room downstairs in the church. All in all, the Scouts had to put up with tremendous wind Friday and Saturday, but ended up having a great time.
